The Worldwide Coffee Market: Trends, Growth, and Projections in 2023

This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the worldwide coffee market as of 2023, offering insights into market revenue, key players, market structure, and future prospects.

Market Revenue and Growth

In 2023, the global coffee segment generated an estimated revenue of US$495.50 billion, with the United States leading the way in terms of revenue generation with a total of US$95.58 billion. The coffee market was projected to experience an annual growth rate of 4.47% from 2023 to 2025, suggesting the industry's robustness and resilience despite various global challenges.

Segmentation and Key Players

The coffee segment comprises Roast Coffee and Instant Coffee. Roast Coffee, which includes both caffeinated and decaffeinated forms, is particularly popular in traditionally coffee-inclined countries like the U.S., Germany, Italy, and Brazil. Instant Coffee, on the other hand, enjoys popularity in traditionally tea-leaning countries like the UK, Czechia, and Asia, owing to the ease of preparation similar to tea.

In the retail sector, Nestlé has made a significant impact, with its Nespresso and Nescafé brands becoming household names worldwide. Other major players include Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), Keurig Dr Pepper, Tchibo, J.M. Smucker, and Lavazza. In the out-of-home sector, companies like Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Panera Bread, Costa Coffee, Peet’s Coffee, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Caribou Coffee have a substantial presence. JAB Holding, a Luxembourg-based company, has built a significant portfolio in retail and coffee shop brands, consolidating its position as a crucial player in the coffee market.

Market Structure and Pricing

The coffee market divides into two main sectors: retail sales for at-home consumption and on-premise or foodservice sales for out-of-home consumption. The at-home market encompasses all retail sales via supermarkets, hypermarkets, convenience stores, among others. On the other hand, the out-of-home market covers sales to hospitality establishments like hotels, restaurants, cafés, and bars. Both markets are valued at retail selling prices, inclusive of all sales and consumption taxes.

In terms of pricing, the International Coffee Organization’s (ICO) Composite Indicator Price (I-CIP) averaged 178.57 US cents per pound in April 2023, marking a 5.0% increase from March 2023. In contrast, Robustas averaged a price of 115.70 US cents per pound, indicating the differential pricing based on coffee types.

Production, Consumption, and Exports

The coffee market underwent a slight contraction in production in the coffee year 2021/22, with a decrease of 1.4% to 168.5 million bags. However, projections for 2022/23 suggested a recovery, with an expected increase of 1.7% to 171.3 million bags. As for consumption, there was a rise of 4.2% to 175.6 million bags in 2021/22, and a further increase by 1.7% to 178.5 million bags was anticipated in 2022/23. This growth in consumption against the backdrop of constrained production led to a projected deficit of 7.3 million bags in the coffee year 2022/23.

On the export front, there was a decline in global green bean exports in March 2023, totaling 10.90 million bags, down by 9.6% from 12.06 million bags in the same month the previous year. This decline was attributed to an amalgamation of factors, such as climatic conditions, socio-political reasons, and seasonality affecting different coffee-producing regions and origins.

Summary

The coffee market, a cornerstone of the global economy, experienced a mix of growth and challenges in 2023. Despite the projected annual growth rate of 4.47% from 2023 to 2025, the coffee market faced issues such as a decrease in production and exports, and an anticipated deficit in the coffee year 2022/23. Nevertheless, the global appreciation and demand for coffee, coupled with the resilience and adaptability of key players, suggest a promising future for the coffee market.
